How to get a backlink on a .edu

Before I get into the details of this post, first I would like to explain what a backlink is and why they are important. A backlink is basically an incoming link to a website, or a particular web page. Search Engines use the number of backlinks a site has as one of the factors to determine that websites ranking. Now if you have backlinks on sites which have a high Google Pagerank and the content of that site is relevant to yours, then your site will rank really well with the SE’s.
So have you ever heard of Folding@home or Predictor@home? Both of these @home projects are what is called distributed computing projects which help fight cancer, and other types of disease. So what you can do is create a team, which allows you to specify a URL to your team site. As you can see below, this team on the folding@home project has a nice fat backlink on this page:
As you can see, PS3Folding.com is actually a site which is a Team PS3 folding@home team. That is the key to this, the site must be somewhat relevant. I have also heard of people looking for forums on .edu domains, but I am not a huge fan of this technique.
Below is the pagerank for the following URL fah-web.stanford.edu:

Not bad huh? So now we have a backlink one a .edu site which has a google pagerank of 8. The Predictor@home project also allows for a backlink to your teams website:
So here are the quick basic steps:
1. Join a project, and create your team with your teams URL.
2. Download the client, and start contributing so your teams stats show up.
3. Continue to contribute your CPU’s idle time to help fight disease.
