Google drops the “Supplemental Result” Tag

supplemental results tag gone

So Google has decided to remove the Supplemental Result tag from search results. Why doesn’t Google want us to know if our sites are in supplemental hell or not? My only guess is that people have figured out how to get out of the supplemental result hell fairly quickly now.

The distinction between the main and the supplemental index is therefore continuing to narrow. Given all the progress that we’ve been able to make so far, and thinking ahead to future improvements, we’ve decided to stop labeling these URLs as “Supplemental Results.” Of course, you will continue to benefit from Google’s supplemental index being deeper and fresher.

Supplemental result pages are often pages that are very old and or have duplicate content. When a site was placed in the supplemental index it was refered to as “Google Hell” as these pages would only show up in the SERPs if there was very little competition. Now this is good for the long tail keyword sites, but not so great for mainstream popular searches.

Google keeps saying that the supplemental results are not a bad thing. But most SEOs are very skeptical of that claim. Supplemental results are in no way equal to normal Google results. From what I have heard, Google will be moving the supplemental status check up into the Google Webmaster Tools.

The method to check for supplemental results is like the following:

site:security-protocols.com.com **** -asssdsd

Obviously this doesnt do much since the “Supplemental Result” Tag has been removed.

How to get a backlink on a .edu

How to get a Backlink on a .EDU Disclaimer: I am not responsible for how this information is used. This is for educational purposes only.

Before I get into the details of this post, first I would like to explain what a backlink is and why they are important. A backlink is basically an incoming link to a website, or a particular web page. Search Engines use the number of backlinks a site has as one of the factors to determine that websites ranking. Now if you have backlinks on sites which have a high Google Pagerank and the content of that site is relevant to yours, then your site will rank really well with the SE’s.

So have you ever heard of Folding@home or Predictor@home? Both of these @home projects are what is called distributed computing projects which help fight cancer, and other types of disease. So what you can do is create a team, which allows you to specify a URL to your team site. As you can see below, this team on the folding@home project has a nice fat backlink on this page:

Team PS3 Folding@home

As you can see, PS3Folding.com is actually a site which is a Team PS3 folding@home team. That is the key to this, the site must be somewhat relevant. I have also heard of people looking for forums on .edu domains, but I am not a huge fan of this technique.

Below is the pagerank for the following URL fah-web.stanford.edu:

Folding@home Google pagerank

Not bad huh? So now we have a backlink one a .edu site which has a google pagerank of 8. The Predictor@home project also allows for a backlink to your teams website:

Team MacNN - Predictor@home

So here are the quick basic steps:

1. Join a project, and create your team with your teams URL.
2. Download the client, and start contributing so your teams stats show up.
3. Continue to contribute your CPU’s idle time to help fight disease.

“iPhone” Domain Names and Google

** Update ** Google has re-included ThemeiPhone.com back into its index. Thanks Google!

So the past week I had been doing some research regarding domain names with the word “iPhone” in them. I just wanted to see what people were registering and what kind of sites where going up. So I wasn’t surprised to see that every variation with the word “iPhone” in them had been taken. I am guessing that Apple (or Cisco?) may have also found this out, and has contacted Google and other search engines to have those sites deleted from their index. So back to my story, when I found out that you can change the wallpaper on the iPhone I had immediately registered themeiphone.com to add to my portfolio of sites which are also wallpaper specific. Last night I checked my SERPS for themeiphone.com and I was #2 for the keyword “iphone wallpapers” on Google. Below my site were a few others which were also going to be iPhone wallpaper sites. Fair enough, I have always liked competitors in this space.

So today I go to check my SERPS for themeiphone.com and it has been deleted from Google’s index! Now I know for a fact that I was not violating Google’s TOS because the site only had a landing page which says “Coming Soon!”. No doorway pages, 301 redirects to that domain, nothing. So I checked on the other sites which were going to be doing wallpapers and they have also been deleted:

themeiphone deleted from google

Others include:

Your search - site:iphonelive.org - did not match any documents.

Your search - site:themeiphone.com - did not match any documents.

Your search - site:iphonewallpapers.net - did not match any documents.

Your search - site:iphonewallpapers.com - did not match any documents.

So I guess the point of my post is that save your cash and do not register any domain names with the word “iphone” in them. Now I know people are going to say, well you shouldn’t buy domain names with a trademarked word in them. Yes this is true, but most companies dont care if all you are doing is promoting the product in a good way.
